I normally drove home on Friday’s when I was working in Knoxville, but this Friday, I was staying in town for a work function the next day. Since I didn’t have anything going on, I decided to hit up Whittle Springs Golf Course and take advantage of the nice afternoon to play a quick nine holes.
I started on the back nine, playing from the white tees and wasn’t striking the ball too well off the tee. I took a penalty on both holes 10 and 11 after hitting the ball out of bounds on the tee shot. Other than the drives, I was striking the ball very well, for my standards. Even though I started the day 4 over par the first two holes, I felt good about how I was playing.
Twelve is a par five that’s straight with out-of-bounds to the right. I played the hole well and had a putt for birdie. After three-putting, I bogeyed the hole. I parred thirteen, a short par 4 up the hill with an electrical substation to the right. I bogeyed fourteen and had a birdy putt on fifteen, but three-putted. I bogeyed the next two holes and parred hole eighteen, the last par five of the day. I finished the back nine just nine over par.
Bogey golf for nine holes is quite impressive for me. Since I was playing so well, I didn’t want to lose momentum and decided to keep playing. I drove back to the clubhouse and paid for the front nine. My goal at this point was to shoot as low as I could. I felt I had a chance to break 90, something I can’t remember doing.
My good play continued on the front nine. I bogeyed the first hole and three-putted on the next two to be five over after 3. I chunked a chip shot on the fourth hole and had to chip again before two-putting and recording another double bogey. It was at this point that I had thought I lost my momentum running back to the clubhouse to pay for the extra golf, but I continued to play.
Hole 5 is a 350-yard, par 4 up the hill. I hit the ball just short of the green on my second shot and had to chip. After two-putting, I walked away with a bogie. My next tee shot left me about 20 feet from the cup. Instead of making a long putt for a birdie, I three-putted and walked away with another bogey.
Hole seven at WSGC is the hardest hole on the course. While only 385 yards, it’s a 90-degree dogleg to the right. Tall trees and houses make it hard to do anything but hit the ball straight out about 150 yards and play it safe. I bogeyed the hole and scored the best I’ve ever shot on that hole.
I bogeyed number seven and nine while shooting par on number eight. I finished the front nine eleven over. Add the nine over from the back nine and I’m just 20 over par. I played better on the back nine, but I was extremely happy with the results. It was almost bogey golf.
I hope you enjoy this type of content. I know it’s a bit longer than what I normally post, but this my first time posting about an entire round. Let me know if you’d like to read more of this type of content.
Until next time, thanks for reading and take care!
