I landed in Copenhagen on January 2, 2019. This was my first stop on my two-week tour of Europe. I chose Copenhagen because I had been listening to a series by Steve Berry. The protagonist is a former U.S. spy that is retired to Copenhagen and owns an antique bookstore near Højbro Plads. Even though most of the action in these novels occur outside of Denmark, the way Berry describes the city was enough for me to make it the first stop on my trip and it didn’t disappoint!
After landing and making my way through customs, I caught a taxi to my hotel, The Admiral Hotel. The Admiral was originally a grain drying warehouse built in 1787 and is located on the Nyhavn Canal. Although it was being renovated while I was there, it was a beautiful hotel. The room was amazing, and the staff was very friendly and extremely helpful.
One of the first things I noticed about Copenhagen is there are bicycles everywhere! I made a comment about all the bikes to the cab driver and was told that the city is the world’s most bicycle-friendly city in the world. I believed it! There were so many bikes on the road.
I am a very picky eater and the traditional Danish cuisine was not something I was even willing to try. Too much fish! But there were a lot of other eateries that offered delicious food, even for folks like me. I did have some Burger King while I was there, but my favorite place was Møller Kaffe & Køkken – Brunch og Café. This place had an amazing chicken club sandwich, just look below!
Here are some other places I found that I enjoyed while I was in Copenhagen:

SALT – The restaurant inside The Admiral Hotel
Starbucks (I know, but I wanted a caramel macchiato)
Amalienborg Palace was one of my favorite places in Copenhagen. This place is four identical buildings that surround the palace square. I was able to tour both Christian VII and Christian VIII’s palace and was able to see the Fairy Tale Queen Exhibition in Christian VIII’s palace. While it was a bit creepy, it was still pretty cool. I’ll let you take a look and you can tell me how creepy you think it was.
The only time I took a cab or an Uber was when I was going to or from the airport. The rest of the time I was on foot walking around listening to an audiobook and just enjoying the cities. I love history and due to the age of these cities, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I didn’t take any photos, but another must-see area of Copenhagen is Strøget. The pedestrian mall was amazing. Anything and everything that you could want is in this area.
