Cancer awareness is at an all-time high. It seems that you can’t turn on a television during the month of October without seeing a college or professional sports team donning the pink to raise awareness for breast cancer. The NHL has supported the fight against cancer with their Hockey Fights Cancer campaign where each team has a night to recognize cancer survivors and raise funds for the fight against cancer.
Today marks the first of November, although I prefer to call it Movember! This month is the one time during the year that I will let any facial hair grow longer than a week at a time. After about a week, I normally will use whatever means necessary to get rid of what facial hair I might have. I intend to grow out my ‘stache this month to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. Men’s health is not something to be taken lightly. This happens to be my fourth year and I’ve raised $642 in the last three years for men’s health. Last year my team (Penalty Box Radio) raised $945. My goal for this year is $250.
Why do I participate in and support this fund raising effort? My bio-dad lost his battle with prostate cancer just over two years ago. But Movember is just not about raising awareness for prostate cancer. Movember is about men’s health in general. Prostate and testicular cancer is something that we might not be able to prevent, but there are other things concerning our health that we can.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to living a long and enjoyable life. That is my goal. I feel that it is my responsibility as a father to make sure I am in the best health I can be for my Kiddo. We have a lot of time to spend together if I make sure I’m doing my part to stay healthy.
Ladies, you can do your part as well! I’m sure you’re not into growing a ‘stache, but I’m pretty sure you have a man in your life that you want to be around for as long as possible. Whether it’s your boyfriend or husband, brother or father, you can encourage them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You can join Generation Mo by becoming a Mo Sista.
Gentlemen, I encourage you to participate. This is something that affects us all and we need to join together to kick cancer’s ass! Take a minute to check out the Movember website. There are many useful tools to utilize when it comes to men’s health. You can also sign up to participate and help raise monies and awareness for men’s health.
